SUBJECT: Fire Prevention Specialist Position
On Thursday, December 9, 2004, interviews were held for the position of fire prevention specialist.
The interview committee consisted of Lauren Wipper, Human Resources; Cliff Anderson, Fire
Inspector; Bob Ruprecht, Building Inspector; and myself. Four candidates were interviewed (Rob
Dreissig, Mike Crepeau, Jeff Smith, and Chris Curtis). On Friday, December 10, 2004, a second
interview was conducted with candidates Jeff Smith and Chris Curtis. After interview discussion, the
interview committee has selected and recommended .I eff Smith for the position of fire prevention
specialist.
On Friday afternoon December 10,2004 I will be meeting with Jeff Smith to discuss wage, vacation,
sick time and other benefits. I have met with both City Administrator Pat KIaers and Finance and
Administrative Services Director Loti .I ohnson to discuss the hiring of .I eff Smith as our fire
prevention specialist.
Additional information will be distributed at Monday's meeting.
Action Requested
I am requesting Council approval for the hiring of .I eff Smith for the position of fire prevention
specialist. A memo outlining the starting wage will be distributed at the Monday, December 13 City
Council meeting. The starting date for this position will be .I anuary 3, 2005. Please feel free to

SUBJECT: Fire Prevention Specialist
I am pleased to report that Jeff Smith has accepted the position of Fire Prevention Specialist with
the City of Elk River Fire Department. Jeff is a 16-year member of the Elk River Fire Department
and an EMT with the Elk River Ambulance Service. Jeff is a life-long resident of Elk River and an
active member of the community.
Jeff will begin the position of Fire Prevention Specialist beginning January 3, 2005 with a starting
wage of $20.00 per hour. Jeff will receive benefits consistent with the city's personnel policy.
After successful completion of a 6-month orientation period, Jeff's pay will increase to $21.00 per
hour. After one-year of employment, Jeff will complete a Job Analysis Questionnaire in order for
the Fire Prevention Specialist position to be reviewed by the Personnel Committee.
On behalf of the Elk River Fire Department, I am excited to welcome Jeff Smith as the new Fire
Prevention Specialist.
Action Requested
I am requesting City Council approval for the hiring of Jeff Smith as Fire Prevention Specialist
beginning January 3, 2005 with starting wage at $20.00 per hour and with benefits consistent with
the City of Elk River Personnel Policy. After successful completion of a 6-month orientation period,
Jeff's pay will be adjusted to $21.00 per hour.
