Background/Discussion
The Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), Anoka Chapter, requested the city proclaim
September 17 through 23, 2016, as Constitution Week. Elk River is part of the Anoka Chapter of DAR.
Marilyn Schroeder will be present to receive the proclamation.

Proclamation
Designating September 17 - 23, 2016, as
Constitution Week
WHEREAS, our Founding Fathers, in order to secure the blessings of liberty for
themselves and their posterity, did ordain and establish a Constitution for the United States;
and,
WHEREAS, it is important that all citizens fully understand the provisions and principles
contained in the Constitution in order to effectively support, preserve, and defend against all
enemies; and,
WHEREAS, September 17, 2016, marks the two hundred twenty-ninth anniversary of the
drafting of the Constitution of the United States of America by the Constitutional
Convention; and,
WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper to accord official recognition of this magnificent
document and its memorable anniversary; and,
WHEREAS, the independence guaranteed to American citizens, whether by birth or
naturalization, should be celebrated during Constitution Week, September 17 through 23,
2016, as designated by proclamation of the President of the United States of America in
accordance with Public Law 915.
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that I, John J. Dietz, Mayor of Elk River, do
hereby proclaim the week of September 17 through 23, 2016, as Constitution Week.

organization.
Members come from a variety of
backgrounds and interests, but all share
a common bond of having an ancestor
who helped contribute to securing the
independence of the United States of
America.
Daughters are vibrant, active women who
are passionate about community service,
preserving history, educating children, and
honoring and supporting those who serve
our nation
Members of the Anoka Chapter come from
29 cities throughout Anoka, Hennepin,
Sherburne, Ramsey, and Wright counties.
National Society of the Daughters
of the American Revolution
Founded: October 11, 1890
Incorporated: 1896 by an Act of Congress
Motto: God, Home, Country
Members: More than 177,000 in 3,000
chapters in all 50 states, Washington D.C., and
internationally.
Eligibility: Any woman 18 years or older,
regardless of race, religion, or ethnic
background, who can prove lineal descent
from a patriot of the American Revolution.

We meet on the second Tuesday of the

Patriotism:
• Collect non-perishable food and toiletry
items for the Anoka County Veterans Food
Shelf.
• Make fleece tie blankets for the homeless
youth of Anoka and the Anoka County
Women's Shelter.
• Knit and crochet caps for veterans.
• Support and participate in the Flag Day
5K Race for the Fisher House.
Volunteer time and materials to various
veterans hospitals and nursing homes,
as well as to veterans charities such as
The Wounded Warrior Project, DAV, and
Red, White and Blue.
• Participate with local schools in awarding
ROTC medals annually to those schools
with active programs.
Historic Preservation:
• Recognize women who have
contributed to our historical legacy
through our Women in History program.
• Support members who publish books
and create websites devoted to local
history.
• Collect funds for historic signboards at
Main and Ferry Streets in Anoka to
commemorate Civil War veterans.
• Support the Anoka County Historical
Society by donating volunteer hours and
a subscription to the DAR magazine,
American Spirit.
• Support the Sibley House in Mendota
Heights and Constitution Hall in
Washington, D.C. through member
contributions.
Education:
Conduct an American History essay
contest for students throughout the area.
Winners are invited to read their essays
at a chapter meeting and are awarded
cash prizes.
• Award American History medals to local
participants in the National History Day
competitions.
Recognize high school seniors who
possess the qualities of dependability,
service, leadership, and patriotism in their
communities through the Good Citizens
Award and Scholarship Contest.
• Celebrate Constitution Week each year
by requesting proclamations from cities
throughout Anoka County and placing
posters and displays at local libraries,
city halls, and local businesses.
Since our founding in 1890, DAR members have worked tirelessly to promote historic
preservation, patriotism and educational ideals in communities across this nation and in
overseas chapters. To help highlight the DAR service organization mission, members are
encouraged to perform and record their volunteer service efforts. Through Service to America
we hope to demonstrate the DAR's widespread significant impact in our communities.
DAR members are working toward the goal of 19 million hours of community service.
The Service to America initiative encourages members to become involved in community
service to discover the rewards of volunteerism, to demonstrate the positive volunteer
opportunities associated with DAR members to others and to help make their local
communities a better, more friendly place. DAR members are giving back to their
communities in appreciation for the nation they love!
With a 19 million hours goal in mind, members are challenged to discover the impact they
make in their local communities by performing all types of community service.
Members volunteer with veterans at their local VA hospitals, make care packages for troops
stationed overseas, clean up local parks, work at homeless shelters and food banks, among
many other service activities.

outreach of members...
This year, Constitution Week activity includes a VOTING DISPLAY at the ELK
RIVER PUBLIC LIBRARY. This nonpartisan presentation promotes voting and
provides direction, for first time voters. Useful information provided by the
Office of the Minnesota Secretary of State assist citizens, in the process of
registration, timeline dates, and through locating their polling places.
This display is presented as a volunteer service to the extended ELK RIVER
COMMUNITY, by the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). Opportunities
to view this display are September 1 -30th
