Background/Discussion
The City Council directed that the Parks and Recretion Commission narrow a list of recommended park
projects to $2 million for a referendum. The Comission reviewed the list of projects at the August 10
meeting and recommends the following with a total amount not to exceed $2 million:
SkatePark ($350,000)
Splash Pad ($650,000)
Orono Parking Lot ($400,000)
Orono Restrooms ($250,000)
YAC Restrooms ($250,000)
Hillside Trail Redevelopment ($100,000)
The Parks and Recreation Commission discussed how these projects would nearly complete the master
plan for Orono Park. They also felt that the site improvements would enhance the park with the
proposed Community Center to be located next to the park.
Mayor John Dietz requested that the park projects be discussed at a work session on September 6, 2016.
Staff recommends park projects prposed in a referenduem should appeal to a broad base of citizens.
Restrooms and trails were viewed as a priority by residents in the Parks and Recreation Master Plan.
The park projects approved by City Council will be included in the marketing literature that staff is
preparing for the community center/park projects referendum.
Financial Impact
$ 2,000,000 inclusion into the Community Center Referendum.
