SUBJECT: Parks and Recreation Update
Adult Softball
Starting in 2005, adult softball will be managed by the Parks and Recreation Department.
Staff has begun contacting teams and arranging for tournaments. Registration information
will be included in the March program guide.
Oak Wilt/Tree Removal
The mild weather in December and early January permitted crews from Parks Maintenance
and Public Works to work on removal of trees that died from Oak Wilt. Over 100 trees were
removed from Woodland Trails and crews have made good progress on the removal of over
200 dead trees in Windsor Park.
Skating at Handke School
Parks Maintenance added an additional rink at the pit this year. This rink has been made
available for youth hockey teams to reserve for practice. As of January 12, 80 hours of time
have been reserved. New floodlights for Handke were included in the 2005 ClP and were
the fIrst project to be completed. Warming house attendants have been logging an average of
75 skaters per day, with a high of 200.
Rivers Edge Commons
The Park and Recreation Commission reviewed the design concept for Rivers Edge
Commons Park (the hardware store site) at the January meeting. Staff will use the feedback
from the Commission, refIne the concept, and bring it back to the Park Commission to
make a recommendation in February.
Park Land Acquisition
After the January Park Commission meeting, the Commission met in a workshop session to
discuss potential park land acquisitions. The focus was on choosing obtainable goals, and
determining funding mechanisms. Two main points of agreement were; that land prices were
escalating and that the park dedication fund would not be suffIcient to fund substantial
acquisitions.
