Item # 5. 8 .
MEMORANDUM
FROM:
Mayor & City Council
Michele MCPherso~ector of Planning
TO:
DATE:
November 20, 2000
SUBJECT:
November Park and Recreation
Commission Update
As fall eases into winter, the activities of the Park and Recreation Commission have
also slowed. During the months of October and November, the Commission has:
1. Discussed placement of a water tower in either Trott Brook or Hillside City Parks.
2. Considered implementing fees for shelter and park usage. A full
recommendation regarding fees will be considered by the City Council at its
December 18,2000 meeting.
. 3. Continued exploring the opportunity to implement a City Park Department.
Members of the subcommittee met with representatives from other cities at the
State Minnesota Recreation and Park Association Convention November 6-8 in
St. Cloud to discuss this issue.
4. Established a date and agenda for the 2001 planning retreat. The retreat will be
January 6, 2001 and will be used to identify 2001 goals, budget expenditures,
workplan, park user survey, and consideration of televising the Commission's
meetings.
5. Prioritized lands desired for parkland acquisition. This summer the Commission
spent several meetings identifying park needs. Now that they have prioritized
the parcels, staff and the Commission will develop a method of approaching
property owners to determine if they are willing to work with the City.
I would be happy to expand on any of the above activities at the meeting should the
Council have any questions.
