Background/Discussion
Following the Elk River High School football team’s State 5A championship, a request was made for the
city to erect a sign near the city limit to identify the city as Home of the 2016 Class 5A Football
Champions. Similar signs are frequently found near small towns throughout the state.
The council should consider the following: 1) Elk River currently has two high schools. 1) Other athletic
teams have won state high school league titles as have other high school teams with recognized MSHSL
activities. 3) Signage type. 4) Sign placement.
