Authorization to Assign Police Officer to Investigation
Over the past several years, the investigations unit has experienced a significant increase in criminal
cases to investigate. As a result of these increases, more and more cases are not being followed-up on
because ofthe caseloads for current investigators.
Assistant ChiefBeahen, Sergeant Thomas Tyler and I have discussed this issue and have determined
that the best solution is to request authorization to establish another adult investigator position. This
would be accomplished by assigning an officer from patrol to the investigations/juvenile division.

For clarification sake, in the recent past, we have discussed having an undercover narcotics officer
position within the police department. At this point in time, we have no intention of creating this
position nor would this investigator be assigned to narcotics.
For comparison sake, Sherburne County has four (4) investigators and one sergeant assigned to adult
investigations. We currently have two (2) investigators and one (1) sergeant assigned to adult
investigations.
As I have indicated to the City Council in past annual reports, our Part I and Part II crime statistics are
higher than Sherburne County. We, therefore, feel that this request is appropriate and hope that you
will support it.
