Mayor and City Council
FROM:
Patrick D. K1aers, City AWistrator
February 16, 1999
DATE:
SUBJECT: Boys and Girls Club Update
Councilmember Thompson is the Chair of the Board of Directors of the Elk
River Boys and Girls Club. Councilmember Motin is also on the Board of
Directors. The Lions Club is working with this organization for the
construction of a facility in Lions Park. The Boys and Girls Club is moving
forward with its fund raising efforts in order to provide money for the
construction of the facility and the operation of the club.
.
The executive director of the Elk River Boys and Girls Club, Mr. John
Fitzgerald, was at the last City Council meeting when council approval was
given for using landfill waste abatement funds in the amount of $65,000 to
assist in the funding of the recycled flooring and windows. In exchange for
this contribution from the city, the club will become a public demonstration
site for appropriate uses of recycled materials. At the February 8 meeting,
Mr. Fitzgerald indicated the goal of the club was to break ground on the
project within 30 to 60 days. The draft ground lease between the city and the
club is in near final form, but has yet to be signed. The conditional use
permit for the project was approved on May 18, 1998.
Councilmember Thompson and/or Motin should be able to provide everyone
with an update on the status of this project at this February 16, 1999,
meeting.
