Ice Skating Rinks
Ice skating rinks continue to be a challenge this winter due to weather conditions. Following
a couple of weeks of good ice conditions in early January, the ice quickly deteriorated the
weekend of January 21-22 as a result of warm temperatures and rain. Due to the timing of
this event and the higher sun angle which makes it more to maintain and keep good ice for
skating,it was determined to focus all efforts on Handke Pit and not put the time and effort
back into the other rinks. Staff continues to work on Handke Pit to ensure ice quality is
maintained through the Shiver Elk River event scheduled for February 10-12.
Tree Removal
Staff is continuing to make great progress in the removal of diseased and hazardous trees at
Hillside City Park. Over ten acres in section three of the mountain bike park has been
cleared of the marked trees as well as clean-up of downed trees on the ground. Roughly
seven acres of section three remain and should be completed in the next two weeks at which
time the crew will shift focus to section two for the remainder of the winter. If conditions
allow, the crew will continue to work on this project through March and complete the
remaining areas of section two next winter in preparation of trail reconstruction on these
two sections of trail in the summer of 2018.
Park Improvement Fund
Preparations for 2017 Park Improvement Fund projects is progressing. Quotes for the
repair of the Trott Brook Farms Park tennis courts have been received and work should be
conducted in the spring of 2017. Engineering staff are drafting bid packets for the various
2017 trail projects, and parks staff are working with MORC on developing the plans for
redevelopment of Hillside City Park's sections one and four trail redevelopment project.
Additionally, staff has begun working with its vendor on the redesign for the Barrington
Park playground replacement.
