Background/Discussion The last formal update to the engineering standard details was completed in 2006. Staff has reviewed our standard details to assure they reflect changes in industry standards for public infrastructure. The proposed changes are identified on the attached details. Beyond routine updates and deletions of obsolete details, staff is suggesting a modification to the typical residential street section. Our "urban" section for new residential streets in developments proposed with sewer and water would remain unchanged with the requirement for a concrete drive-over style curb on both sides (Standard Plate # 2010). An alternative section for any new"rural" style residential developments is proposed to be included as an option. A development qualifying to use this standard would be one without a public sewer and water system. This design alternative includes a slightly widened right-of-way width (66-feet vs. 60-feet) and ditches along the roadway where possible (Standard Plate #2011). This "rural" or"minimal impact" design will allow flexibility to make use of existing topography and the new roadside ditches for storm water treatment. It will lessen the overall investment and construction of public infrastructure and its future maintenance costs. This standard would be consistent with the style of many roadways seen throughout parts of town that were developed without sewer and water.
