SUBJECT: Director of Planning Selection Process

Jim Brimeyer, The Brimeyer Group, Inc., the executive search consulting firm
that is working with the city on filling the director of planning vacancy has
received approximately 35 applications for our position. He has interviewed
ten candidates and will be forwarding this information to Finance Director
Lori Johnson and I later in the week of March 1. Lori and I will be reviewing
this material and will be meeting with Jim in the afternoon of March 8 in
order to select the top five or so candidates for i,nterviews. Only the candidates
being interviewed are public information. However, the information on the top
10 applicants are available for City Council review if desired.
Planning Commission Chair (also former assistant Sherburne County engineer
and current Brooklyn Park city engineer) Doran Cote has volunteered to be
part of the interview team. Planning Commissioner Louise Kuester was part
of the interview team last fall when we were looking to fill the city planner
position. Louise has volunteered to sit in on the interview team once again.
Councilmember Thompson was also a member of the interview team last fall.
At this meeting, council representation (one or two members) should be
identified to help in the selection process. Once the members have been
selected or volunteered, then we need to establish interview dates and it is
hopeful that the interviews can take place before Easter. During the day on
Tuesday, March 30, or Wednesday, March 31, are currently the two best
possibilities for interviews. It is anticipated that one top candidate will be
selected from this process for consideration by the City Council.
