MEMORANDUM
FROM:
Mayor & City Council
Pat Klaers, City Ad~;ator
March 8, 1999
TO:
DATE:
SUBJECT: Liquor Store 'Candidates Update
.
The city received 52 applications for the liquor store manager position.
Rejection letters have been sent to 34 of these candidates and staff has
selected nine for interviews. The remaining nine candidates are being "kept
on hold" in case the interview team does not find any of the top nine to be
acceptable. This seems unlikely considering the quality of the applicants and
the number being interviewed, but it is always good to keep a few alternatives
available.
We are still trying to coordinate interview dates and it is difficult to find two
days in a row that are open for Councilmembers Farber and Dietz, Lori
Johnson, and I. Currently we are looking at March 16 and 17, however, March
16 has yet to be confirmed by one of our interview team members.
The plan is to have interviews with each candidate for about one hour and,
additionally, each candidate will have a written test which should take 20-30
minutes. Hopefully the committee will be able to select one candidate for
council consideration. We would like for the selected candidate to come and
meet the City Council in a somewhat informal setting (a special meeting prior
to a regular council meeting), and then have the appointment made during the
regular City Council meeting. However, with this number of candidates and
interviews it may take the committee a second round of interviews to select
the top candidate. Additionally, if the City Council desires to see more than
the one top candidate as selected by the interview team, then this should be
known in the near future before we get too far along in the process.
