As his martial arts instructor, I have had the opportunity to work with Eric for many years. In this time, Eric has demonstrated immense dedication and professionalism in his pursuits. Eric started classes with me at the age of 6, and he made it clear that earning a black belt was his goal. He came to classes multiple times a week, pushing himself to improve with each class. Striving for a specific goal for a little over four years, especially for someone so young, is a great example of a dedicated individual. Currently, Eric has devoted one night a week to volunteer as an assistant instructor. His commitment to our team and to our students has been exceptional. He rarely misses a Friday; if he does, he makes sure to notify me in advance of his impending absence. This past winter, it impressed me greatly when I asked Eric if he was going to our annual tournament, and his response was that he wanted to be there to support the students. With these past and current experiences in working with others and his devotion to achieving his goals, I have no doubt that Eric will be a great asset to the Energy City and Sustainability Youth Committee. June 8, 2016 To Whom It May Concern: Salk Middle School 11970 Highland Road Elk River, Minnesota 55330 763.241.3455 Fax: 763.241.3456 www.e1kriver.k1 2.mn.us/sms Ms. Abranette Barry is a young lady that deserves your careful consideration as a member of the Energy City & Sustainability Youth Committee. We have had the distinct pleasure of having Abranette as a student at Salk Middle School for the past three years. Abranette exudes a quiet confidence that has had a profound impact on those around her within our school community. Although elated to see Abranette's accomplishments while in our building and knowing she is making a natural transition to the high school level, we are truly heartbroken to see her go. Abranette has strong academic prowess and easily demonstrates this in her academic studies. One would think that a student of this nature may complete the necessary requirements and simply be proud of her high achieving accomplishments. That is simply not the case with Abranette. In her kind and confident manner, she is always pushing the envelope for her learning. For example, Abranette was selected and participated in Genius Hour as a 7th grader. She self-selected her own topic of Stem Cell Research wanting to inquire about the risks and benefits of research initiatives in this area of scientific study. In addition, during her 7th grade year she selected the topic of microbiology for Science Fair. Because of safety expectations, she needed to find a trained scientist to mentor her through her project. On her own, she emailed and recruited a microbiologist from the University of Minnesota to assist her with her research. Her topic examined the links between a strain of bacteria and cleaning methods like regular water, soap, alcohol and hand sanitizer. I believe these examples go to show what kind of individual Abranette is when approaching any topic. She will go above and beyond when passionate about a topic area. Abranette has been very involved in clubs and organizations at Salk. She has been a part of the Math Team, Lego Robotics Team, National Junior Honor Society, Band, Choir and Principal's Cabinet. She has routinely placed at high levels in the Science Fair and History Day competitions. Through all of these opportunities Abranette has demonstrated amazing ability to work well with others, show leadership skills amongst her peers and be an intent listener to other's perspectives and viewpoints. Abranette presents herself as a calm and confident young lady whose insight is well beyond her years. Abranette has strong organizational skills and can be counted upon to follow through with whatever she indicates she will accomplish. She is tenacious about connecting with key community members or doing research independently to gather or gain necessary information to address any issue that is presented to her. This quality has shown through during Abranette's tenure at Salk Middle School No matter what Abranette pursues, she will have a lasting impact on the world around her. She will be someone to watch as she rises to greatness in her own right. Don't let this young lady pass you by. Her abilities are truly a gift to any group or organization that has the pleasure to work with her. If you have further questions of me regarding Ms. Abranette Barry, I would be more than happy to speak with you further. I can be reached at 763-241-3458. Sincerely, Julie Athman, Principal IBM June 7, 2016 To Whom It May Concern: Salk Middle School 11570 Highland Road Elk River, Minnesota 55330 763.241.3455 Fax: 763.241.3456 www.elkriver.k12.mn.us/srns I am writing with the highest regard for the work of Salk Middle School 8th grade student Charles Osugo and recommend that you consider him as a member of the Energy City & Sustainability Youth Committee. Charles has been enrolled at Salk for the past three years. As the principal at Salk Middle School, I have the distinct honor of interacting with hundreds of students on a daily basis. Charles, in particular, stands out as one of our brightest stars academically, personally and professionally. Charles is passionate about many things. He makes these passions known to others around him and is intentional about presenting his ideas to key decision makers. Charles functions under the belief that he can have a profound impact on the world around him and then takes the steps necessary to make this occur. In particular, Charles has been instrumental in helping our school develop a Lego Robotics Team and establishing the HUSH (Helping U Seek Help) Student Organization. Charles is academically astute and uses his abilities to the fullest potential when applying himself to his academic work. He has routinely placed at high levels in the Science Fair and History Day competitions and has consistently been on the "A" Honor Roll. Charles has demonstrated his strong ability to work in teams both in the classroom and in appointed areas such at the President of the National Honor Society, Charles is articulate and can be strong in his convictions, however has built solid skills in his ability to listen to other's perspectives and takes these into account. He is able to look at situations from multiple perspectives and consider others' viewpoints. Charles has been a member of the Salk Principal's Cabinet. In this forum students are able to share their ideas and insight with me as a means to be a sounding board for the student voice. Charles always expresses the desires of the student body in a respectful manner. He also respects the views of the underclassman on the Cabinet. Although detailed organization is not always a strength for Charles, he always finds the means to function in an acceptable manner that will allow him to find success in anything he pursues. His dedication to a cause will often offset his slight lack of oversight to minute details. However, this small factor should not deter you in considering Charles to be a part of this committee. Charles is someone that will have a profound and lasting impact on his community and the world around him. He truly is second to none and is a youth voice that should be included in this very important discussion. If you have further questions of me regarding Mr. Osugo I would be delighted to speak with you further. I can be reached at 763-241-3458. Sincerely, J r Julie Athman, Principal
