Request for Action To Item Number Economic Development Author* 6.1 Agenda Section Meeting Date Prepared by General Business March 20, 2017 Colleen Eddy, Economic Development Specialist Item Description Reviewed by Marketing Update Amanda Othoudt, EDD Reviewed by Cal Portner, City Administrator Action Requested Item presented for information. Background/Discussion Staff continues to partner with Sherburne County, Greater MSP, and Minnesota Marketing Partnership through the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED). The partnerships allow us the opportunity to leverage our current marketing budget, attend market visits, conferences and trade shows that revolve around our four targeted industries. Staff presented a year-end update to the Sherburne County EDA, our partner on several data center - focused trade show events and activities. The county confirmed their partnership for 2017. Marketing: The Signature Packet/Portfolio and the Community Profile will be updated with new content by May 1. Staff has distributed the profile at trade shows, conferences and during market visits and is in the process of submitting the packet to International Economic Development Council for their Promotional Award. EDA/HRA Website: Staff continues to work with GSA on content that populates the news feed. We have been receiving quarterly analytic reports which show the number of hits/page views each of the page receives. Staff attended a Lead Forensics demo, an Advanced Website Lead Generation/Tracking program through GSA and will present information at the EDA meeting. Trade Shows/Conferences: Staff is gearing up for trade show season and is anticipating attending various shows focusing on our targeted industries; data center (IMN and Caprate events), Medical Device (MD&NI), Energy, and Manufacturing (Fabtech). Last year the city partnered with DEED on a couple new shows (Economix and OFII) which staff anticipates attending in 2017. Advertising: During the first quarter of the year we have advertised in three different trade industry publications. A new venture was with the Minnesota Wild organization. The city took out a 1/4 page ad in the Wild game program. The program is distributed to suite ticket holders along with attendees who purchase the 4A UR program for $5 at each home game. The total cost of the ad was $3,000 with an impression rate of over 10,000/game. Social Media/Tweeting During the various trade shows, staff tweets via our Twitter feed. Staff also re -tweets posts from our various sponsors. Video(s): Staff is currently working with the city's video production team to produce a short video highlighting the Nature's Edge Business Park development. The project will include stories and footage from Morrell Oversize, Gatr Trucking and Sportech Inc. Production is expected to start once the weather turns to spring. The video will be aired on the city's YouTube Channel and on the EDA/HRA website/webpage. Sponsorships: The city anticipates sponsoring the annual Real Estate Journal's Energy Summit and the annual Data Center Summit in partnership with ERMU. The sponsorships included an opportunity to present at the event, an exhibit booth where staff distributes some of our informational packets and various swag. The summits average between 100-150 attendees. Financial Impact Funding for trade shows, marketing and advertising are included in the 2017 budget. Website: City of Elk River Economic Development I http://econdev.elkrivermn.gov Economic Gateway Developments for your Website As you know, we always strive to make our product better for you and the people that will be visiting your website! We endeavor to be ahead of our competition and with this goal in mind we continue making improvements and upgrades to our system. The biggest changes that were implemented the last quarter in 2016 are: • List Template: A new template pulling from the List Maker module was created to create an interactive display of list information. Information is displayed by title with expand/collapse functionality to allow the user to access more details. Content can be sorted into categories and filtered by sections to allow pages of isolated information. • Accessibility Improvements: Multiple changes were implemented on the front and back -end to allow better accessibility in sites (for improved 508 compliance). In the admin the addition of the Accessibility Checker in CKeditor allows admins to see possible accessibility issues flagged and suggests solutions. On the front-end ALT tags (to better support users on screen readers) have filled in the blanks on standardized image content in News, Projects, and Staff module templates. • Safe -Deleting Improvement: Some clients have been encountered issues when using the safe deleting functionality of their site, as the page name of the deleted page is not freed up until a GateKeeper representative verifies the deletion. We have modified the safe -deletion to immediately free up the name of deleted pages (without requiring GateKeeper verification) so that admins making a second attempt at creating a page are able to recycle the page name. • CKEditor Styling Improvements: The Styles menu in CKEditor has been updated to remove outdated techniques of applying styles. New styling techniques and - in some cases - new style options have been added to the Styles menu. In addition, styles can now be more easily identified in CKEditor's Preview mode as - in many cases - a simplified style is applied to the preview to give a sense of how the styled content will look in relation to other content. The above are just the most relevant pieces we have been working on and 2017 proves to be another big year of website advancement for Golden Shovel Agency and our clients. Our development team has big plans for this year and will continue working on more and bigger improvements for the Economic Gateway platform, and we will keep you posted on the progress and let you know when they go live!
