VILLAGE OF ELK RIVER COUNCIL MEETING
January 29, 1897
Common Council met at the Recorder’s Office January 29, 1897, at 7 o’clock P.M.
Present: H.C. Hastings, President; Frank P. Brown and L. Pollard, Trustees; W.F.
Chadbourne, Recorder.
The official bond of W.F. Chadbourne was presented and accepted.
The official bond of Charles M. Babcock as Village Treas. was presented and accepted.
The following duly verified bills were presented and on motion allowed and orders drawn for their
respective amounts:
A.N. Dare for printing notices of application for
license, 3 in number, $9.90
William Iliff for cleaning snow from streets, $2.60
N.D. Trumbull, janitors for election day, $1.00
The communication from G.N. Rey accepting Notice of Ordinance in regard to trains regulating
their speed to 4 miles per hour across the streets in Village was taken up and disposed of by Council,
agreeing to stand by said Ordinance and instructing F.P. Brown to see that persons should not
practice jumping on and off from said trains while running at that rate of speed through the Village.
The following resolution was then presented and unanimously agreed to by Council roll call:
Ayes, 4 (H.C. Hastings, L. Pollard, F.P. Brown and W.F. Chadbourne); Noes, none.
Resolved that Sec. 1. Of Ordinance No. 27 entitled an Ordinance Regulating the Sale of Intoxicating
Liquors be amended by striking out the words “Five Hundred” and substituting in place thereof the
words “Seven Hundred and Fifty.” The Recorder was instructed to publish the same as Ordinance
No. 39 and to take effect immediately.
A petition was presented to the Council signed by 60 voters and taxpayers asking for certain
restrictions in regard to issuing license for the sale of intoxicating liquors in the Village of Elk River.
Ordered filed.
V.B. Rubeck presented his bond for license to sell liquors in the Village according to restrictions by
Council adopted.
On motion bond accepted and placed on file, and license granted for one year, on said V.B. Rubeck
presenting a receipt from Village Treas. for $750.00.
Nothing further appearing, meeting adjourned.
