This report is a monthly highlight of department activities related to collaborations,strategic
planning,staff changes/developments,and park operations.
Bailey Point Nature Preserve Entrance Gate
At the July Park Steward Meeting,Bailey Point Nature Preserve Park Steward Eric Toth,discussed
the idea to open and close the entrance gates to the park. He felt this might keep overnight
parking/illicit activities out of the preserve. Our operational policy is to not close park entrances
and staff does not recommend changing the procedure. The police desire to keep access open for
park patrolling. All parks are closed at 10 p.m. per ordinance and the police have done excellent
work enforcing this.
Hillside Park Trail Construction
The reconstruction of the mountain bike trails at Hillside City Park is complete. Sections 3&4 are
now complete. Staff has received frequent positive feedback from residents and trail users. The
stewards are doing an excellent job finishing up the trail construction work.
Barrington Park Playground
Build it and they will come. Staff expects great interest in the new playground at Barrington Park.
We are considering a ribbon cutting ceremony in mid-September to highlight the new playground
with both the City Council and Commisson.
Riverfront Concert Series 2017
All reviews of the expanded park and riverfront concert series have been positive. The last three
concerts are powerhouse bands in the world of regional entertainment:

• Kayak,canoe,and stand up paddle board rentals will allow beachgoers to get

• Stormwater features will be incorporated to handle rainwater and runoff,
enhancing water quality for Lake Orono.
• Pickleball and basketball courts will be added on the west side of Gary Street.
• Sand volleyball will be relocated with lights.
• The off-leash dog area will expand to add more varied open and shaded areas
for dogs and owners,and incorporate a 2 step entry sequence.A specific area
for small dogs will be separated from the larger dog park area.
• Fields at Dave Anderson Athletic Complex will be expanded where feasible
to 300'or incorporate a taller fence at shorter dimensions.
