7.2. SR 08-09-1999 Memorandum ITEM #7.2. -\./ To: . ElI{ From: Elk River City Council Assistant Chief Jeff Beahe~ 8.JL- 08-03-99 Date: Police Department Subject: Replacement squad car On Tuesday 7-27-99, while returning home from the level three offender meeting, I was involved in a personal injury motor vehicle accident at Armstrong Blvd. and Hwy 10. Another motor vehicle ran a red light and broad sided my vehicle, causing severe damage to the squad. Insurance adjusters for the other driver and our insurance companies have examined the squad (Unit 607) and declared it to be a total loss. In addition to the car, most of the emergency equipment on the inside was damaged or destroyed. We expect a settlement for the vehicle and contents this week. We have sought bids on a replacement car from Saxon Motors and Elk River Ford. The following two cars were given to us as their best available deals: . Elk River Ford 1999 Dodge Intrepid $18,865.00 Used 1998 Ford Crown Victoria with miles @20-27,000 Saxon Motors 1999 Chev Lumina $16,500.00 $15,900.00 These prices do not include sales tax. We estimate the insurance payoff to be around $13-14,000.00 We will have to spend $4,000.00 to replace the emergency equipment. This will require council approval for the difference between the insurance settlement and the cost of the new vehicle with tax plus the replacement gear. We believe the difference will be approximately $6,933.00. There are several options for payment of the difference. It could be taken from the police budget if funding allows. It could also be taken from the capital improvement fund. If the police budget does not cover the full amount, the remainder could be taken from the insurance reserves. . 13065 Orono Parkway. P.O.
