SUBJECT: Outdoor Ice Rinks
At the October 13, 1999, meeting, the Park and Recreation Commission requested
funding for new ice rinks in the Orono Park area. One ice rink would be on Lake
Orono near the swimming beach, and one would be a sheet of ice and a set of hockey
boards located between the Gary Street water tower and Orono Road.
The costs involved are as listed below:

· 2 portable trailer warming houses @ $500/season
· Benches and floor coverings for portable
trailers @ $150/each
· Lights and electrical supplies
(Utilities to install at no cost)
· Hockey board material
(City park staff to build and install)

Recommendation
Staff recommends approval of this issue soon so as to allow the utilities department
time to install the poles and the street department time to level and berm the site.

Ice Rinks for Orono Park Area
The location of additional ice rinks in the Orono Area offers some excellent
recreation opportunities as well as some restrictive considerations.

Lake Orono Ice:
Positives: - Large area available.
Negatives: - Can not flood or plow until the lake ice will
support a truck.
- Lighting will be from shore side only.
- Lighting may affect residents along the lake.
- Not possible to do hockey boards.
MSF Area Ice:
Positives: - Irrigation water available for flooding.
- Hockey rink is possible.
Negatives: - No type of windbreak available.
The costs associated with ice rinks include:
Warming House Rental - 2 months
Modification for Warming House

The Park & Recreation Commission should consider the need for and
amount of use received by neighborhood rinks at Barrington Park and
Moldenhauer Park. Without warming houses or lights, these rinks do not
appear to get much use. Is it worth department time to flood and maintain
them?
