Analvsis Two Planning Commissioners have resigned in 1999: Doran Cote and Lester Morris. Commissioner Cote's term expires February 2000 and Commissioner Morris' term expires February 2001. . Five applications were received (attached). The following table summarizes the information on the applications: . Two of the applicants (Franz Weckauff and John Morphew) and were interviewed at the November 22, 1999 City Council meeting. Recommendation Staff recommends that the City Council interview the remaining three candidates; they have been invited to attend the December 20, 1999 meeting. The Council may then appoint candidates for two, one or none of the vacancies. The Current has an advertisement calling for volunteers for all of the upcoming Commission vacancies and interviews will again be scheduled for January 2000. . . . To: Members of the Elk River City Council From: Franz Weckauff Subject: Planning Committee member Date: December 4, 1999 I would like to tell you about myself and why I am interested in becoming a member of the Elk River Planning Committee. I was born in Cologne, Germany of German parents on September 29, 1921. My father came to Minnesota in 1929 and after working for a year, he sent for my mother, my sister and me. I was 8 years old. I grew up in St. Paul and graduated from Mechanic Arts High School in 1940. After I attended a vocational trade school for a year, I enlisted in the Navy. I spent 30 months in the pacific Ocean in the Amphibian Forces during World War II. I was discharged in October 1945. I began working for Honeywell in January 1952 as a machinist and worked there for 32 years. I retired in 1983 as a production engineer. Almost four years ago, my wife and I moved to Elk River to a Country Crossing Townhouse. In May 1996 I had a heart attack. In June of that year, my wife died of cancer. In September, I had a triple heart by-pass. In December I underwent a second surgery to replace part of the main artery in my left leg. Since then I have quit smoking, I walk two times each day, seven days a week, and I feel great! My hobby was woodworking. I still do some wood caving. I belong to Retired Seniors Volunteer Program (RSVP) and do volunteer work in Elk River. I recently purchased a computer and am having a great time learning how to use it. I enjoy living in Elk River and would like to have a part in making decisions as to the growth in the area. I served as President of the of Country Crossing Townhouse Board for almost two years. I am still active as a volunteer committee member. I hope that you will consider me for a position on the Planning Committee. While only living in Elk River for slightly over one year, I am interested in the city and would like to become more active in the community. I feel that my abilities lie in the types of activities in which the Planning Commission deals. I am the distribution manager for Medtronic, a large medical device corporation. I am responsible for two large facilities with a multi-shift, diverse work force of approximately 100 employees.
