Michele Bergh is the Recreation Manager. The next Community Recreation Board meeting is Monday, December 20,1999. Attached for your review is this agenda packet. Paul and/or Michele should be in attendance at this City Council meeting to update the council on recent community recreation activities. Motion to approve October 18, 1999 Community Recreation Board Minutes was made by Paul Motin, seconded by Gary Eitel. 6-0. 4. DiscussionIBoard Action Items a. Open House Community Recreation will have an informal open house on December 15 during the business day. e. Mosh Pits Discussion took place about moshing at Emporium. No changes in the current policy were suggested. 5. Staff Reports/Informational Updates Attached to agenda 6. Community Reports a. Dayton - None b. Elk River - Boys and Girls Club opening this month. Two new rinks will be open this . season for outdoor ice-skating. c. Hassan Township - None d. Otsego - None e. Rogers - None f. ISD 728 - Will be discussing what to do now that the bond and levy items failed. Would like to consider using the city halls in Elk River and Otsego for general polling place, as they would be a more appropriate location than the schools when school is in session. 7. Michele Bergh Community Recreation Staff Report December 1999 New offices We are moved into our new space and are really happy with it. Our open house is December 15 during business hours. This will be very informal, with cookies and coffee. We also have magnets with our new address and phone number on them and will be having a drawing for a sweatshirt. I hope you will all be able to stop by. Emporium Emporium is going well and concerts continue to be popular with the local students. We have finally gotten the facility back in order now that the construction is done. The students are happy with the new space and feel that it works well for the activities we have there. We are in the process of purchasing a newer, larger TV for them as well as a P A system for the bands. Both of these items will draw even more students in. Winter registration Registration is going very well for winter programs. We have 530 registered so far. Many of these are for the Skating Academy, which continues to grow and be very successful. Figure skating club Some of the parents are in the process of starting a club for figure skaters through the United States Figure Skating Association, which is the organization our skating program at the arena is affiliated with. You must be a member of a club to be able to compete in USFSA sanctioned competitions. The club is run by parent volunteers much like the Youth Hockey, Youth Baseball, Girls Fast Pitch and other associations in our area. There is a one-year probationary period the club needs to go through before they can be approved as an official club. This requires many terms to be met such as buying their own ice, having at least 25 members, and having an adult instructional class. Our office is working with the arena and the club to coordinate efforts and minimize issues that may occur with a new group coming into the picture. There are many details that need to be sorted out and we will be working together to accomplish this. Spring programming The spring brochure will be delivered on Feb. 3, with our registration beginning immediately and the CE/ECFE mass registration beginning Feb. 5. Programs will include 3 On 3 Intramural Basketball League, gymnastics, pee wee programs, Easter egg hunts and more. Outdoor ice rinks We are working on staffing the warming houses this year. We have several returning staff members and surprising we have several applications for people interested in working this year. It looks like we'll have no problems getting everything covered (if it ever gets cold enough@). Adult leagues Adult leagues are going very well. We have Women's Volleyball beginning it's winter session in . January, Co Rec Volleyball, with 11 teams, runs through February and Men's Basketball just began in December, with 10 teams, and runs through March. Yellow Ribbon program We are working with a newly formed organization at the High School. They are trying to get information into the various schools about suicide prevention. The Yellow Ribbon program is a national program that was started by two parents who lost their son to suicide. The students are doing the work and we have just been helping them with the cards and brochures they distribute. This is a program that hits home for many in the area and seems to be well received at the schools. They are in the process of getting the information into all the jr. highs. Marketing We are working hard to increase our marketing efforts for programs and events. Dan has been great with flyers and sending items to the schools. We are now doing a calendar each month for open gyms so that people can have the information in calendar form. . .
