Discuss and prepare to provide direction for Elk River Senior Activity Programming Services
Background/Discussion
Following the failure of a citywide referendum to finance a multipurpose community facility last
November, the Council directed staff to continue the second option for an ice arena improvement and to
initiate discussions with Elk River YMCA officials regarding opportunities to move city senior
programming services to the YMCA.
The Mayor, Council Member Wagner, and staff met with YMCA Executive Director Molly Hanson
YMCA and ER YMCA Community Board Member Tim Dolan to better understand opportunities.
Since that time, YMCA officials have had internal conversations and had conversations with Y Board
officials regarding building expansion to meet needs of Elk River Seniors currently fulfilled at the Activity
Center.
The Activity Center is in need of substantial improvements to maintain operations and continues to be
the most expensive programmed recreation facility in our inventory for the General Fund. Finding a
suitable solution that meets the needs of our growing senior population and is in the best financial
interest of taxpayers is an important consideration.
