Appoint,by motion, an acting mayor for 2018.
Background/Discussion
Per city code and state law, the Council is required to appoint an acting mayor. The acting mayor performs
the duties of mayor during the disability or absence of the mayor from the city, or if there is a vacancy in the
office, or until a successor has been appointed.
Although all Council is eligible for this appointment at any time,past practice has been a rotation of Wards
4-1-3-2,which corresponds with the election terms and allows for a year of experience for new
Councilmembers before assuming the role.

In 2014, the acting mayor position changed due to the Ward 1 seat vacancy. Note also that Councilmember
Westgaard moved wards following redistricting for the 2012 election. During previous discussions, the
Council expressed consensus to return to the original rotation which began in 2016.
To continue past practice,it is recommended to appoint Councilmember Ovall as acting mayor for 2018.
