Discussion.
Background/Discussion
At the January 16 City Council work session, staff presented the concept offering a signature summer
festival event downtown to bring the community together. Council directed staff to refine the plan and
bring it back for further discussion. Key aspects of the event will include:
Held in downtown Elk River
Saturday, July 7, 2018
Afternoon to evening
Fireworks normally held on July 4 will be moved to coincide with event
Feature services provided by city and community organizations
Contests, games, music, arts, craft and food vendors
Family oriented
Staff will be presenting more details as well as possible partners for the event. Staff will also present a
scaled down Open Streets program proposed for the month of August as part of the Farmers Market and
Riverfront Concert Series.
Financial Impact
After further review, staff determined the cost to close both Jackson and Main streets will be
approximately $3,000, similar to the previous Art Soup events that were held downtown. Money already
allocated in the budget for fireworks and the Riverfront Concert Series would be used to support this
event and local groups have expressed interest to participate.
