July 7, 2018.
Background/Discussion
City Council received an update at the February 5, 2018,work session regarding an Elk River Summer
Festival Event following a review of initial concepts at a work session on January 16. The key aspects
presented to City Council were also presented to the Parks and Recreation Commission on February 14.
The Commission recommended to move forward with the proposed festival downtown on Saturday,July
7 and recommended the name of Elk River Fest.
Recreation staff has begun developing plans that could be accomplished for this July. All of the
downtown businesses were contacted by staff and each expressed support for this event. Staff did
express concern at the February 5 Council meeting with having time to market the event with a name and
hopes this decision can be made at the March 5 City Council meeting.
Key aspects of the event discussed with City Council and the Commission include:
■ Held on Main Street Saturday,July 7, 2018
■ Afternoon to evening
■ Fireworks normally held on July 4 will be moved to coincide with event
■ Feature services provided by city and community organizations
■ Contests, games, music, arts, craft and food vendors
Financial Impact
■ $1,000 has been allocated in 2018 for a signature event.
