3.4. SR 04-11-2005 *Item 3.4.* MEMORANDUM TO: Mayor and City Council FROM: Stephen RoWf, Building and Environmental Administrator DATE: April 11, 2005 ~f2- SUBJECT: Environmental Intern The City Council authorized staff to hire an Environmental Intern during Environmental Technician Rebecca Haug's maternity leave. Under the direct supervision of the Building and Environmental Administrator, the intern will help with such tasks as: Refuse Hauler Licenses, recycling rebates, Oak Wilt Suppression Program, Street Disruption Permits, archaeology tours, enforcement of the Wetland Conservation Act, Floodplain and Shoreland rules, Mineral Excavation Licenses and the administration of the city's permits for NRG, GRE and the Elk River Landfill. The intern may also get involved in erosion control and NPDES permits, but the Engineering Department will take the lead in this area during Mrs. Haug's absence. Staff is recommending Mara Anderson be hired as an Environmental Intern at $10 fhour. The internship will expire no later than August 19, 2005. Ms. Anderson is a graduate of Elk River Senior High School and will be receiving a Bachelor of Environmental Design/Landscape Architecture degree from the University of Minnesota in May of 2005. Due to her remaining class schedule, Ms. Anderson will work part time until May 17. Part-time will actually work out well because her first duty with the city will be training under the tutelage of Mrs. Haug in preparation of her leave. Mrs. Haug's due date is May 1. She will also be available for questions via e-mail and phone during her absence.
