6.1 PCSR 04-25-1995 I c ity of Item 5.1. 1kRiver MEMORANDUM TO: Mayor & City Council FROM: Pat Klaers, City Admi tr or DATE: April 17, 1995 SUBJECT: Cable TV Update City Clerk Sandy Thackeray has a memo attached that provides an update on some of the progressive steps being made by the Cable Commission. The purpose of some of these steps is to make public information and public meetings more available to our citizens that have cable TV. The city needs to continue being positive about cable TV as it becomes a more important vehicle in keeping our citizens informed and up-to-date on current municipal issues. Starting soon, the taped City Council meeting will be on cable TV 12 times, the EDA meeting on eight times, and Planning Commission meeting • on eight times each month. One of the cable TV comments that I continually receive relates to the City Council, EDA, and Planning Commission members not being heard. Now that we have the trouble straightened out at the cable TV head end station, there is no reason for members not being heard over the audio system. We have a modern state-of-the-art system installed and if the system is used properly, all members will be heard on the telecast. In this regard, all councilmembers are reminded to speak clearly and directly into the mikes. Councilmembers Dietz and Farber are the easiest to hear on the broadcasts. It has been noticed lately that councilmembers rarely leave the council table. In this regard, it may be appropriate for the City Council to consider wearing the lavaliere mikes that we have placed on the "goosenecks". It was the original intention of the mike system that these mikes be attached to the clothing of the councilmembers (and EDA and Planning Commission members). The wearing of these mikes should not be an intrusion to the members and would help ensure that the public watching the telecast can hear the comments from our elected and appointed officials. • 13065 Orono Parkway • P.O. Government Public Access Channel 12 now allows communities to call in community information that can be made available to the public via the cable access channel and the telephone. Currently, the general information for Elk River displays information such as city hall office hours and address, council meeting dates and times, comprehensive plan meeting dates and topics, council representation, etc. Also included on this channel is current event information such as the library book sale, the city plant-a-tree program, and clean-up day. This will be an excellent avenue for keeping the public informed of issues and events taking place in the city.
