Due to illness, I was unable to do this. I am enclosing a copy of my proposed speech and also some pic- tures to show you the view we have from our front door. Steve, this home built at 21101 York St. NW was done so by some very inconsiderate people. And now with the addition, it is an absolute eyesore. It is really sad when an existing homeowner can have their property value so greatly reduced by the con- struction of a new home. • Do me a favor, get in your car with the Mayor beside you and take a look at what the lack of a simple zoning law requiring due con- sideration to adjoining properties and the neighborhood as a whole, can do to the cosmetic look of a community. S. cerely, d 1Mary u Rankin 21105 York St. NW Elk`River MN 55330 • I am not a public speaker, so please bear with me. • My name is Mary Rankin and my husband, Larry & I bought an existing home in Greenhead Acres, 3rd Addition 7 years ago. We have recently learned that it was once a hunting lodge, so it had a unique setting once the addition was plotted. Our home faces south, while the front of our lot faces west on York St. Last fall, someone bought the lot adjacent to us. It borders our property on York St. and wraps around the corner on 211th. This person had 1.6 acres to build a home on, but elected to build it in front of our front door, without any due consideration to our property at all. To make matters worse, this person has just been given a permit to add to the garage and bring it even closer to our • property line, all within their setback limits, or so I' ve been told. Our idea of living in the country was to have a few acres and at least have the illusion of having privacy and no close neighbors. I know for certain that no one here would appreciate owning 24 acres, only to have someone build a home right in front of one's front door. ***PICTURES*** My point is that in the rural areas, before a new home is built, why not have the surveyor, the builder, and the owner be obligated to take into consideration what the new building will do for the neighborhood • and especially adjoining properties. New construction should be an asset to the community and not take anything away from existing homes and properties. • As frustrating as it has been to see this take place, it has been equally so when letters to the Zoning Commissioner and Mayor Duitsman voicing our concerns over this matter have been totally disregarded. Also, a letter to the editor of Star News was totally ignored, although they advertise that if your letter is not published, they will tell you the reason why. I would expect our Elk River city officials and also the local newspaper to have a care about community matters and at least give a homewoner the common courtesy of a response over their concerns. I would like to add here, that Gary Schmitz of the Zoning Office has been most kind and helpful the numerous times I have called him. Please believe me, I am not an angry or hostile person, but I do feel • that when someone does me wrong or I feel my rights as a citizen have been violated, I tend to fight back. Larry and I have always taken pride in our city and what we own in Elk River and believe that we deserve the same respect and con- siderations in return.
