Background/Discussion The Beautification Committee was established in March of 2017. From May through October, two winners will be chosen each month. All winners will be recognized at the November City Council meeting. Business owners will receive public recognition and an award for making the City of Elk River beautiful! At their May 14, 2018, meeting,the Beautification Committee reviewed one application and is recommending approval to the following business in category one: ■ CHOW Mixed Grill with the award for making substantial improvements to the exterior of their building in the last year. Call Meeting to Order Pursuant to due call and notice thereof, the meeting of the EDA Beautification Committee was called to order at 10:04 a.m. 2. Consider Agenda Motion by Bakken and seconded by Hardin to approve the agenda. Motion carried 5-0. 3.0 Consent Agenda Motion by Magnussen and seconded by McCormick to approve the consent agenda. Motion carried 5-0. 4.1 Review City Beautification Applications Atlas Staffing Ms. Eddy presented the application and confirmed the nomination description. Members completed the judging rubric. Landmark Motel and Extended Stay Ms. Eddy presented the application and confirmed the nomination description. Members completed the judging rubric. Motion by McCormick and seconded by Magnussen to award Atlas Staffing the award for consistently maintaining their property in an attractive and well-kept manner. Motion carried 5-0. Motion by Bakken and seconded by Magnussen to award Landmark Motel and Extended Stay with the award for making substantial improvements to the exterior of their building and/or landscape in the last year. Call Meeting to Order Pursuant to due call and notice thereof, the meeting of the EDA Beautification Committee was called to order at 10:03 a.m. 2. Member McCormick had one revision on page 3 under eligibility. 4.2 Marketing and Promotion Ms. Eddy opened the discussion. The committee discussed several ideas such as; utilizing an Instagram account to showcase the winners, post a contest on Facebook, launch a survey on the Rivers Edge Facebook page, tag winners with # and @ symbol on Twitter, present the program at local networking groups (Colleen will create a one page flyer to distribute to the various groups), create videos on the city’s YouTube channel, announce the program during the Summer Concert Series, include in the chamber newsletter and distribute information to the county surveyor to get his thoughts. 5.1 Announcements Next meeting is May 14, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. 6. Background/Discussion The City Beautification Committee serves to recognize business owners, whom have made an effort to clean, repair, improve, and enhance the overall aesthetics of their property to maintain the beauty of their neighborhood. This committee encourages community improvements which enhance our city’s visual image and economic vitality. CHOW Mixed Grill and BBQ was nominated to receive the following award: 1. Background/Discussion At their March 12, 2018, meeting members discussed several ideas such as; utilizing an Instagram account to showcase the winners, post a contest on Facebook, launch a survey on the Rivers Edge Facebook page, tag winners on social media platforms, present the program at local networking groups, distribute flyers, create videos on the city’s YouTube channel, announce the program during the Summer Concert Series, include information in the chamber newsletter and seek nominations from the county surveyor. Staff will be working on many of these advertising techniques throughout the program period. Staff checked with the city’s communication team to see if the Beautification Committee would be able to create an Instagram account. We are not able to create an account at this time. Their building is architecturally unique and appealing as a focal point on the west end of Elk River. They’ve done extensive of landscaping around the entire building, espeically their outdoor seating and fire pits, including a very attractive pergola. As a new construction on a visible corridor into the City of Elk River, this new business and restaurant has attracted a significant number of new visitors to the community. The Business has consistently maintained their properties in an attractive and well-kept manner.
