Action Requested
Approve, by motion, the hiring of Benjamin Picone as Planning Intern effective June 6, 2018.
Background/Discussion
When Planner BrieAnna Simon resigned, it was decided to recruit for a Planning Intern to fill our needs
for the rest of this year as well as provide great experience to someone new to the Planning field.
We went to market and received 11 applications. Following interviews with the top five candidates, we
recommend Benjamin Picone for this internship position.
Mr. Picone holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Japanese and spent three years teaching English classes in
rural Japan following his graduation. It was in Japan that he developed a love for livable, useable public
spaces. He is currently working on his Masters in Urban and Regional Planning at the Humphrey School
of Public Affairs at the University of Minnesota.
Financial Impact
Mr. Picone will be paid $14.00 per hour and work no longer than six months. During the summer, Mr.
Picone will be available up to 40 hours per week and once school begins in the fall, he will reduce his
hours to accommodate his school schedule.
There are funds available from the vacant planner position to accommodate this internship.
