Action Requested
Approve, by motion, the hiring of Thomas Chaffin as Police Officer effective August 21, 2018.
Background/Discussion
Upon the retirement notice of Detective Kim Peterson we went to market to fill a police officer position.
We received 57 applications and interviewed 40 candidates. Second interviews were held with eight
candidates, five of whom moved forward to interview with Chief Nierenhausen. Following background
investigation and psychological and physical pre-employment testing, we recommend Thomas Chaffin for
this position.
Mr. Chaffin obtained his postsecondary education while he was attending Maple Grove High School. He
worked as a community service officer for the Maple Grove Police Department before moving to Dallas
Texas to work as a patrol officer. After four years in Dallas, Mr. Chaffin has decided to come back home.
Mr. Chaffin will be paid at the starting wage for a police officer per the LELS Local 231 contract. All pay
and benefits will be consistent with union contract and city policy.
Financial Impact
This is a budgeted position.
