Mayor to read the proclamation recognizing Minnesota Manufacturer's Week as October 1 — 7, 2018.
Background/Discussion
The State of Minnesota established Manufacturer's Week to recognize the economic role local
manufacturing companies have in our economy. Elk River has 53 manufacturing establishments
providing 1,694 jobs. This amounts to 14.4% of alljobs in the city, or roughly one in seven jobs.
Manufacturing employment grew by 13% from 2016-2017, significantly faster than the job growth for the
city overall.
This year the city will recognize Manufacturing Week with several activities:
■ A direct mailing will be sent to all the manufacturing companies in Elk River.
■ The city will replay the State of Manufacturing video which was made in partnership with the city,
chamber and school district and will be aired on all three entities websites and social media sites.
■ Promotion of the special week will be highlighted on all city social media sites.
■ Star Nears will feature a quarter-page advertisement and highlight this special week.

Designating October I to October 7, 2018 as
Minnesota Manufacturing Week
WHEREAS, Manufacturing is a dynamic and robust industry, crucial to the health and strength of
Minnesota's diverse economy; and
WHEREAS, The manufacturing industry contributed $49.2 billion to Minnesota's economy in
2017; and
WHEREAS, In 2017,workers took home $20.9 billion in wages from Minnesota manufacturing
jobs, the second-highest amount among the state's business sectors; and
WHEREAS, Manufactured exports grew 7% to $19 billion in 2017, compared to the national
export growth of 5%; and
WHEREAS, Manufacturing provides 319,000 highly skilled,well-paying jobs,which significantly
contribute to Minnesota's high standard of living and economic vitality; and
WHEREAS, Manufacturing in Minnesota pays an average annual wage of$65,728,which is 17%
higher than the state's overall average wage.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that I,John J. Dietz,Mayor of Elk River, do
hereby proclaim October 1 —7, 2018 as Minnesota Manufacturing Week in Elk River.
