Background/Discussion
Butterfly Garden weeded The butterfly garden is maintained by the master gardeners,staff has
v. ,i them a few times, but the library may want to reach out to the master gardeners about
maintaining this better. Another option is for the library to solicit the assistance from the
Adopt-a-Park volunteers for the property. Weeding landscape beds and general grounds clean-
up are common activities conducted by these types of groups.
Pavers in front of building need to be replaced Staff did conduct replacements of the pavers
that were chipped and broken earlier this spring as well as resetting the pavers at the
concrete/paver transition areas. I checked the site out today and it looks like there are 5 more
pavers that the surfaces have chipped again. We will have someone in the next couple of days
go out there and replace those as well. This may become an ongoing issue over the next
several years as these pavers are beginning to age and with the salt usage to keep them safe for
walking in the winter they will continue to degrade over time.
Clean out the flower beds by the drive thru backdrop and the front of the building and add new
mulch hese beds are maintained every two weeks as part of our schedule. In addition,the
shrubs in these areas were trimmed back about a month ago. Additionally, all of the
landscaping at the library has been re-mulched twice this summer. Mulch is a biodegradable
wood product that will always break down and get bleached from the sun. Generally we would
only topdress the mulch once per year so we have already gone above and beyond standard
maintenance practices. They will receive a fresh coat of mulch again in 2019.
Spruce tree's in the back of the building need to be replaced The spruce trees in the back of the
building that were r zmoved last fall will not be replaced. These trees were removed because
they had overgrown their location and would soon be causing structural issues for the back

sidewalk and parking lot area. Additionally,these trees inhibited snow removal around the
grounds. This was discussed at a previous meeting and was the reason we removed them.
Put in fill over the roof drainage trench in the back of the building its is ultimately a design
issue. We have addressed this area several times throughout the summer,the downspout was
just not designed properly for the volume of water flow it puts on the ground. We will install
some addition granite rock over the area expanding upon the work that has already been done
there to hopefully prevent continual washouts from occurring.
Put new mulch around the trees in the back of the building The city has discontinued the
practice of mulching around trees. •,iIs practice has been found to be the leading cause of
girdling roots which over time may result in death of the tree or failure of the tree during wind
storms. The spruce trees that fell over during 2017's storm were perfect examples of this as
the entire root mass was contained completely under the mulched rings thus leaving the tree
susceptible to toppling in a strong wind event.
What is the status on the LED lights for the parking lights funded for 2018 uilding Maintenance
is working with the vendors to get the work scheauiec
