Winter Reading Program Is Coming Jan 2 to Feb 28, 2019 GET

We're gearing up for Winter Reading Program again, with mugs and caps44+040
as prizes.The program is for teens and adults—just read, fill out reading
slips, and enter a drawing for these or other prizes. Registration will be
available at the library or online at www.griver.org.
GRRL Collection Expands to... Telescopes...
Thanks to the generosity of the Buffalo Rotary Club, we've had a telescope available for checkout in
Buffalo for the last year or so. It's gone so well that now the rotary club is providing donations to
expand the project. We'll soon have 20 telescopes available for 3-week checkout. By the end of the
year patrons will be able to place holds on these and have them sent to their local library just like
books, music or DVDs.
... and Try It Yourself Kits!
Another new development in the collection is a series called "Try It Yourself' with the basic materials
to try new crafts or sports. Craft kits include knitting,jewelry,clay,and paper crafting. Sport kits
include Frisbee golf and baseball.The specific parts vary, but kits include instructional material and the
non-consumable parts. For example,the paper crafting kit includes a book of paper crafts, 6 different
styles of scissors, 1 corner punch tool, a circle punch tool, 2 trimmer blades, a mini scoring board, and a
paper trimmer. All the patron needs to bring is the paper and glue.Try It Yourself Kits are available
now for request and checkout.

Library Services Coordinator Report-Board Meeting-11/27/18
In outreach news,we attended the 2nd annual Elk River Community Connect event sponsored by
Sherburne County United Way, and talked to approximately 83 people about library services and
programs. In addition,we attended the ISD 728 Cultural Potluck event where we met 65 children and
families,and enjoyed some multicultural food,dance,and a fashion show! Our Fall FairyTales outreach
to a local private preschool was attended by 40 preschoolers who learned more about our 1000 Books
Before Kindergarten program,as well as the Itsy Bitsy Spider and Humpty Dumpty!
In children's programming,we continue to see good attendance at our Lego hours,and our story times,
incl.our Halloween themed family story time,where children and parents heard stories, played games,
and made a fun craft, all while in costume! We are continuing to offer our school age book club,which
has seen a drop in attendance the last two months, however,we have adjusted our timing to attract
children later after school,and hope to pull in some home school families as well in the coming months.
On Dec.5&6,we will be offering our Hour of Code classes,which had great participation last year,and
we are hoping and planning for the same this year.
In teen and tween programs/services,we seem to have established 3-4 regular attendees at our
teen/tween book club,and are hopeful we will keep building. We continue to offer our passive teen
trivia contest,which had good participation at about 50 responses for"The Princess Bride"and "The
Book Thief".
For adult programming, we had a good turnout of 17 adults for Allen Eskens,author of"The Life We
Bury",and our 121 concert brought in about 10 patrons. Our Crafternoon programs for adults have
generally been full with 12-15 participants,and usually lead to registrations for the next class. Our
ancestry and genealogy class had 9 participants that wanted us to offer the class again soon. We will be
having music in the library in December,with Andrew Walesch, a "Sinatra"style performer,and Angie
Hoeft,with guitar classics, as well as an author visit from Patrice Johnson,the author of"Jul",a Swedish
American Holiday cookbook.
We are already looking forward to the Winter Reading program in January and February with a theme of
"Get Yeti to Read". We are starting a new program series in January called"Schooled in Art",specifically
targeting home school students, and we will be trying a brain games night to show our patrons the fun
and learning they can have with our brain fitness kits. We will also have a couple of musical guests with
guitarist Dave Cofell,and the Skally Line old time String band in January and February, and an author
visit from Frank Weber,author of the Murder Book.
We are trying some new things,and building on the established programs and services,and hope to
continue to grow and expand our offerings in 2019.
