If the third time is the charm, Police ChiefTom Zerwas may
hit it big this time.
After twice advertising for bids on several confiscated ve-
hicles with dismal results, the chief is trying again.
About 10 people expressed an interest in buying the vehicles
last week after an article appeared in the Star News, explain-
ing the city's intention to salvage the cars because of a lack of
bidding interest.
City officials initially advertised for bids in the legal section
of the Star News. They received one low bid, whichwas
rejected.
The city next advertised for bids in both the Star News and
the Star Tribune. Two people bid that time, but the bids only
ranged from $6 to $126.
The City Council accepted the $126 bid on 1984 Ford Escort
and decided to salvage the other three vehicles, which had
been confiscated by police in DUI and drug cases. -,
But now with the sudden interest, Zerwas wants to give
people one last time to bid. "I think it's worth a try," he said.
The vehicles are a 1961 Ford Falcon, a 1984 Dodge Omni and
a 1983 full-size Ford van. All three are parked at City Hall,
13065 Orono Parkway. .
Sealed bids will be accepted until 4:30 p.m. Feb. 15 at the
police station, which is located in city hall.
To bid, people should write their name, address, phone
number and bid for each vehicle on a piece of paper, put it in
a sealed envelope and submit it to the police department:.

A public meeting on updating the Elk River Comprehensive Plan will be held
at the Elk River City Hall on Thursday, September 21, 1995, beginning

Ride down memory lane
Elk River Firefighter Larry Morrell gave a group of people
a ride down Jackson Avenue on a 1934 Chevrolet fire
truck during an open house Saturday at the Elk River Fire
Department. The free rides were a big hit and went on all
afternoon.
In general, Fire Chief Bruce West said there was a very
nice turnout for the open house.
Among the events was bingo, sponsored by the VFW
Auxiliary. A total of $227 was raised, which will go to the
Guardian Angels.
The fire department also sponsored a dance that night.
New plan will be reviewed
A draft of Elk River's new comprehensive plan will be
reviewed next week by the committee which has been over-
seeing its update.
The plan covers several components including residential,
commercial, industrial, transportation, utilities and park
and recreation.
The committee's meeting begins at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept.
21, at Elk River City Hall, 13065 Orono Parkway, and is
open to the public.

Crystal man dies in
Highway 101 collision
A two -car broad -side collision
at the intersection of Highway
101 and County Road 42 in Ot-
sego claimed the life of a 38-
year-old Crystal man Saturday
night.
David Scheef died at Mercy
Hospital, shortly after he had
been transported there by am-
bulance from the scene of the
crash.
He had been a passenger in a
1982 Buick Skyhawk driven by
34-year-old Dennis Mark
Gunderson of St. Cloud.
Gunderson was also taken to
Mercy Hospital where he was
treated and released.
Three people in the other ve-
hicle, a 1992 Chevrolet Corsica,
driven by Steven Nielsen, 43 of
Nevis were also taken to Mercy.
Nielsen and his wife, Julie, 44,
were treated and released.
Julie's mother, Jeanette Mass,
72, was treated for minor inju-
ries and released the following
day.
Nielsen's car was traveling
northbound on Highway 101
when it collided at the intersec-
tion with Gunderson s vehicle,
which was heading east on
County Road 42.
The State Highway Patrol
would not comment as to
whether or not one ofthe drivers
may have run a red light. The
accident is under investigation.

Elk River City Hall on Thursday, July 27, 1995, beginning at 7:00 p.m.
This Committee will complete its discussion on residential development. Issues
that may be discussed include minimum lot size, mix of housing opportunities,
housing maintenance code and other related standards.
The Committee will also be discussing the Park and Recreation element of the
Comprehensive Plan. Issues such as future park locations and strategies for
providing a diverse park system will be addressed.
The last item that will be presented is an update from the Chamber Task Force
outlining goals for the Central Business District (downtown).

Dear Elk River Business Owner, Business Manager, Property Owner:
The City of Elk River and its Planning Commission recently initiated an
update of its existing Comprehensive Plan. A fourteen -member Steering
Committee was established to evaluate existing conditions in the community
and to bring forth recommendations for inclusion in the update of the
Comprehensive Plan. This plan will help guide development decisions over
the next decade and will be a valuable reference document for the City, its
residents, and its businesses.
I wish to advise you of the next meeting of the Steering Committee. It is
scheduled for 7 p.m. on Thursday, July 14, 1994, at the Elk River City Hall.
The Steering Committee will consider the topic of commercial development in
order to develop a section in the Comprehensive Plan on this topic.
A portion of the July 14th Steering Committee Meeting will be reserved for a
public hearing on various elements associated with commercial development.
Topics may include an overview of the existing inventory of commercial sites,
the absorption rate of commercial land, and potential areas for new
commercial development.
As a business operator or as an owner of commercial property in Elk River,
you are cordially invited to attend this meeting and to participate in the
discussion. Your insights into these topics will be particularly welcome.

parks.
