Discussion of resident request for swing set and second basketball hoop at West Oaks Park
Background/Discussion
Resident Mary Germundson came to the Commission Open Forum in September to request if the Parks
and Recreation Department could consider installing a swing set and a second basketball hoop at West
Oaks Park. She stated that many kids of all ages in the neighborhood would use the swing set cause
many of the homes in the immediate area do not have yards large enough to install swings.
Staff visited the park soon after this request was received and found one possible option to locate a new
swing set. A second basketball hoop is not possible based on the size of the current court surface. The
swing set could possibly fit next to the playground,but the larger issue is the cost and funding.
Staff is not recommending to proceed forward with this request for the following two reasons: A limited
park improvement fund and any improvements to West Oaks Park, a neighborhood park,is not
recommended in the Parks and Recreation Master Plan adopted in June 2015. Signature parks are the
greatest needs identified in the Plan.
Financial Impact
The estimate to install a new swing set is $14,163 which does not include the cost of staff time and the
actual swing set equipment.
