Welcome & Introductions a. See attached sign-in sheet 2. Project Roles & Responsibilities a. City of Elk River City will be responsible for overseeing the project, providing input and feedback and final review and approval of the design and final documents for bidding. b. WSB WSB will provide schematic design, design development plans and construction documents for the project in order for contractors to bid on plans. c. Design Committee Committee will be asked to provide input and feedback for guidance regarding the design of the project, including nature play elements and theming. 3. Project Overview / Tentative Schedule A short schedule is required to meet optimal bidding period (winter/early spring) and to begin construction as soon as possible in 2019 in order to meet grant requirements. a. Schematic Design b. Preferred Schematic Design c. Design Development d. 50% Construction Package e. 100% Construction Package f. Bidding g. Something to note: nature play be tricky to bid because of the unknowns by the contractor (it is not typical concrete or playground work)– WSB will work to ensure all details are carefully laid-out in order to get the best pricing for this project and contact Contractors in advance to gain interest. h. Construction 4. Design Discussion a. Site Features i. Likes interactive water play – concrete channel, think about timing of water and how to turn on/off ii. Likes sand play / mud play iii. Likes elevation change / overlook idea iv. Likes stones set into hill slope for climbing v. Construction Costs i. Construction budget is $200,000 for nature play area which includes grading, earthwork, restoration (landscaping), etc. ii. Donations by area companies for materials may be an option - boulders c. Maintenance Needs i. Natural play – natural materials will need replacement more often due to weathering & decomposition ii. Sand replacement and maintenance as it tends to wash away iii. Tree limbs / tree cookies - replacements as items disappear iv. Concerns about aggregate and other destroying manufactured elements, scraping off paint d. Natural Resources – ideas to mimic in play area or issues i. Frogs, turtles, deer ii. Streams, bridges iii. Raspberries, blackberries grow in the park iv.
