Action Requested
Approve, by motion, the hiring of Christopher Decker for the position of maintenance mechanic
effective July 8, 2019.
Background/Discussion
Maintenance Mechanic John Legatt resigned in March. We went to market to fill this position, received
18 applications, and interviewed five candidates. Following background, reference, and pre-employment
testing, we recommend Christopher Decker for this position.
Mr. Decker has worked as a fleet mechanic since 2001. During that time, he has worked for Richfield
Public Schools, Jefferson Lines, and most recently the City of Minneapolis. He has a 2-year degree in
Heavy Duty Truck Maintenance from Dakota County Technical College, holds a Class A Commercial
Driver’s License, and is a DOT-Certified Commercial Vehicle Inspector. Mr. Decker is also a Baldwin
Township firefighter and completed Elk River’s fire academy.
Mr. Decker will start at step B of the Maintenance Mechanic pay scale in the IUOE Local 49 contract. All
pay and benefits will be consistent with union contract and city policy.
Financial Impact
This is a budgeted position.
