Action Requested
Provide staff direction for snow and ice control operations on city sidewalks.
Background/Discussion
At the April 15, 2019, City Council Work Session, staff presented a summary of the city's snow and ice
control policy, service levels, and areas of concern. Staff brought back additional information on July 15.
Staff is requesting Council direction in relation to service levels for city sidewalk snow and ice control.
Currently, city staff removes snow and ice from approximately 24.6 miles of the existing 52 miles of city
sidewalk. With current staffing levels and equipment the city is unable to complete snow and ice removal
within the 24-hours provided by city ordinance.
Options for consideration are to add the resources to complete snow removal on the full system or
modify the existing ordinance to allow 48-hours to have sidewalks cleared of snow so city operations are
in compliance.
