Approve,by motion,replacement of the MB Sidewalk Machine with a Trackless Sidewalk Machine.
Background/Discussion
The city purchased its current MB Sidewalk Machine in 2013. At the time of purchase, the machine was a
prototype developed by MB and the city was asked to provide feedback on the machine to allow MB to
improve its design. MB made numerous modifications to the machine based on staff feedback prior to
mass producing the machine.
Since the purchase,it has been in the shop for repairs 36 times with over $16,000 in repairs, and over 130
labor hours. Repairs are complicated because the prototype does not match the engineering drawings of
the machine MB mass produced; and additionally,MB no longer produces a sidewalk machine. Because
of these factors, staff often has to speak directly with MB to determine what replacement parts are
required and once determined it can take 3-4 weeks for parts to arrive.
Due to the maintenance history of this machine, the poor response time for replacement parts, and the
lack of a back-up machine capable of conducting sidewalk snow removal, staff is recommending the
purchase of a new Trackless Series MT7 Sidewalk Machine and maintaining the MB Sidewalk Machine as
a backup piece of equipment.
The Trackless MT7 has proven to be a reliable machine utilized by many cities in the area. MacQueen
Equipment is a local vendor and has a fully-stocked inventory of parts on hand which can be delivered
within one business day. Additionally,MacQueen Equipment has service staff to conduct repairs and
provide consultation to the city's maintenance staff.
Financial Impact
$153,150.00 from the Equipment Replacement Fund, currently not allocated in the 2020 Capital
Replacement Budget
