VILLAGE OF ELK RIVER COUNCIL MEETING
January 27, 1936
The special meeting of the Village Council was held at the Municipal Bldg store Monday January 27,
1936 at 8:00 o’clock P.M.
Members present:
J.D. Flaherty, Pres.; G.A. Bailey, Wm Patenaude, Trustees;
Wm H Greupner, Clerk.
Harry Dow local manager for the N.W. Bell Tele Co requested to have this meeting called. He
wanted the Village Council and a member of local business men present to meet with Mr. S.J. Vaill,
District Commercial Mgr of Tele Co. Mr. Vaill gave a very interesting talk, explaining that Elk River
is to have a new telephone system to be installed early this spring to replace the present outmoded
system which has been in use a great many years in Elk River. The new system will be thoroughly
modern and as up to date as can be found in any community of this size. The N.W. Tele Co are
spending approximately $12000.00 in making this improvement. Covering the cost of a new
switchboard and a complete change in telephones.
Mr. Vaill showed the people present by actual figures that their company has a deficit of ¼ to 4 ½
% in the last 11 years operating at Elk River and if this continues they would have to ask for a rate
increase.
Frank White, Village Attorney, suggested that the matter be brought up to the Commercial Club to
see if they could not encourage people to install telephones in homes not having them now.
No further business meeting adjourned.
