VILLAGE OF ELK RIVER COUNCIL MEETING
May 3, 1937
The regular meeting of the Village Council was held at the Municipal Bldg Monday May 3, 1937 at 8
o’clock P.M.
Members present:
J.D. Flaherty, Pres.; Geo Cornelius, G.A. Bailey, Wm Patenaude, Trustees;
Wm H Greupner, Clerk.
The minutes of last meeting were read and approved.
Herman Mahron came before the Council and asked to be appointed foreman of the Village
continued building curb and sidewalk under the W.P.A. project. Mr. Mahron was told that it already
had been voted on to hire Albert Middelstadt if the W.P.A. work was to be continued.
Morris Wilson, Manager of the Elk River tourist park, asked for a $50.00 appropriation which is the
usual amount the village has paid in past years. A motion was made by G.A. Bailey seconded by Geo
Cornelius to allow Mr. Wilson $50.00. Mr. Wilson also asked for another $50.00 to help the
Commercial Club establish an information bureau which will be located at the Village Park. The
Council members were of the opinion that the money should be paid by the business men as they
were the ones to derive a direct benefit. A motion was made by G.A. Bailey seconded by Geo
Cornelius to table the above request until the next meeting.
L.G. Nelson, President of the Fair Association, spoke about the street that enters the fair grounds,
on the east side and asked if it would be possible for the Village to do some work on this road.

present time.
Leo Denars and Mr. Haenze came before the Council inquiring about the streetlight they had
petitioned for a few months ago. A motion was made by Wm Greupner seconded by G.A. Bailey to
have a light installed on Thomas Street near the railroad tracks and another light installed on Hope
Street at the turn across the railroad track providing the E.R. Power and Light Co would not charge
anything for installation. Motion carried.
L..G. Nelson was asked to be present at this meeting to discuss the light rates again. Mr. Nelson
stated that his company intended to reduce the rates in the near future but were waiting to settle the
franchise with the Village of Princeton first so the rates would be same in all the Villages they
service. Mr. Nelson was told that the Village of Elk River was not satisfied and wanted immediate
action on this matter and no more delays whereupon G.A. Bailey made a motion seconded by Wm
Greupner to have Frank White Attorney draw up a resolution asking for a rate reduction and send it
to Mr. Foster in care of the Bare Co. in Chicago. Motion carried.
Ernest Shadick was also present and said he did not feel lie paying the difference for his one inch
water meter. He knew the Village had passed a resolution whereas the property owners had to pay
the difference between a ¾ and 1 inch meter, but his pipes were installed before this resolution was
passed therefore he thought he should have his meter without any charge. A motion was made by
G.A. Bailey seconded by Wm Patenaude to have a one inch meter installed in Ernest Shadicks house
without charge. The Clerk to send for two, one inch meters from the Pittsburgh Meter Co. Motion
carried.
Wm Greupner, Clerk reported that Ed Belanger who has been taking care of the Water meters is
unable to continue working for the Village because he is employed at other work. After some
discussion it was decided to have the Clerk see Lee Slaybeck about taking Mr. Belangers place.
Mr. P.V. Christens milk application was presented with Dr. Kiebels approval. A motion was made
by G.A. Bailey seconded by Geo Cornelius to allow P.V. Christen a license to sell milk and cream.
Motion carried.
Leo Demars and Mr. Haenze asked if it would be possible for the Village to tarvia Thomas Street
from Depot Street to the railroad tracks. They were told that the Village was not able to do this at
the present time but chances were that the county might tarvia this street.
The clerk was instructed to see Frank White if it was necessary for the Village to draw up a traffic
ordinance for speeding or if this was taken care of by the new laws which were passed by the state.
Geo Cornelius and G.A. Bailey were appointed to look into the matter about putting up a stop sign
on Main and Princeton Street.
A motion was made by G.A. Bailey seconded by Geo Cornelius to allow the following bills and
order them payed.
