MEMORANDUM TO: Mayor and City Council FROM: Pat Klaers, City Administrator DATE: July 18, 2005 SUBJECT: Library Board Update Councilmember John Dietz is the City Council liaison on the Library Board. At the July 18,2005 City Council meeting, John is scheduled to provide the Council with an update on Library Board activities. Attached are the draft minutes from the June 28, 2005 Library Board meeting. s: \CouncillPatlUpdates llibraryupdate.doc Minutes Elk River Library Board Meeting June 28, 2005 The Board and guests from the city of Elk River toured the Monticello Library and then met in their conference room. Leslie called the meeting to order at 6:40 p.m. Mick Stoffers, Leslie Anderson, Anne Schroeder, Mike Hangaard, Karen Stelk, Allison Olson and John Dietz were in attendance. Joan Allen of GRRL and Chris Leesburg, Pat Klaers and Bill Mertz of the City of Elk River were present as guests. The minutes from the May 2005 meeting were approved. Mick reported no correspondence, no suggestions and no Treasurer' Report. Leslie opened the floor to a discussion about what should be included in a survey about the Elk River Library use and possible expansion. The survey will be available at City Hall, Lion's Park and the library. It will also be included in the next parks and recreation brochure going out from the city in September. The brochure form of the survey will look different from the survey available at the library, Lion's Park and the city offices. Those who complete the survey can return it to Lion's Park or the library and will be entered in a prize drawing. Mick will ask the Friends of the Library to donate the prize. The survey will have a deadline of November 1, 2005 for a response. The survey will be two-sided. The reverse side will have directions, address information and a statement that results will be published on the city website and available in hard copy in the library. Suggestions for the survey included: Leaving space at the end for "other comments". How often do you use the library? Would you use a coffee shop if one were added to the library? Rate the following priorities (1 most important, 4 least important) More quiet study areas More seating areas More community space Large children's space Where would you prefer the library to be located? City Hall, Current Location, Lion's Park If you use the library computers, do you use them for? Internet access, or word processing/other What improvements do you suggest for the library? Besides the staff, what do you like best about the Elk River Library? What do you like least about the Elk River Library? Allison will draft the survey and email it to members of the library board for comment, correction and additions. In other business, Karen reported that 6 more chairs had been ordered for the library. In lieu of traveling to any other libraries, Chris and Bill will prepare a slide show of the new libraries being built in Chisago County to be presented at the board meeting in July or August. The meeting was adjourned at 7:40 p.m.
