VILLAGE OF ELK RIVER COUNCIL MEETING
June 1, 1953
A regular meeting was held at the Municipal Building on June 1, 1953.
Members present:
E.A. Parent, Mayor; Harry Dow, Dan Bailey, August Meyer, Trustees; H.A. Briggs,
Clerk
The meeting was called to order by Mayor Parent. The minutes of the last meeting were read and
approved.
Mrs. Archie Larson and delegation from the Community Club were present at the meeting. They
asked for a high platform for the life guard at the beach. Also a raft and diving board. The Council
agreed to have a high platform and diving board constructed.
Mr. Dugan, manager of the local N.W. Bell Telephone CO, complained about persons fishing from
the Elk River bridge at the power plant stating that fishing lines get tangled in the telephone wires
causing much damage and expense. Motion was made by Dow and seconded by Meyer to have signs
posted at bridge forbidding fishing from the bridge. Carried.
Marshall Micheau asked that there be no truck parking on State Highway No. 10 between the drug
store corner and the alley at the rear of the Spot Café. The Council agreed. The Council also agreed
to have crosswalk moved from opposite the variety store to opposite the Drug Store by the
Highway Department provided there would be no expense to the village.
As a result of a complaint by a delegation from west part of town regarding drainage, a motion was
made by Bailey and seconded by Dow to lay a tile from the end of Line Street south under Main St.
Motion carried.
A motion was made by Briggs and seconded by Dow to appropriate $200.00 for expense of Fire
Department for attending their annual convention. Carried.
A motion was made by Bailey and seconded by Meyer to instruct the clerk to write the State
Highway Department to give consideration to Bernard’s application for an entrance on Highway 10
for his service station. Carried.
A motion was made by Briggs and seconded by Dow to lease space in the fire hall for pump for civil
defense for emergency purposes. Motion carried.
Upon motion by Bailey and second by Briggs, Lester Derr’s salary was set at $350.00 per month
beginning June 1, 1953. Carried.
As there has been so much trouble with the village hall roof recently a motion was made by Bailey
and seconded by Meyer to have the roof resurfaced by the All Weather Paint and Roofing Co of
Minneapolis at a cost of $386.00. Motion carried.
