VILLAGE OF ELK RIVER COUNCIL MEETING
May 4, 1959
The regular meeting of the Elk River Village Council was held at the Village Hall on May 4, 1959
with all members present. The meeting was called to order by Mayor Johnson. The minutes of the
last meeting were read and approved.
There was discussion regarding making a parking lot of the down town park. A motion was made by
Kemper and seconded by Bergeson to make a parking lot in the park reserving the North end and
having some shrubbery and flower pots along the edge. Motion carried all voting in favor.
Fire Chief Harry Dreissig having recovered from his recent illness. A motion was made by Briggs
and seconded by Meyer re-established Harry Dreissig as Fire Chief with Herbert Greupner Asst.
Carried.
Archie Larson was present. He gave the Village a check for $42.32 from the girl schouts to be used
toward building a fire place at the new park.
Walter L. Johnson introduced Jerald Weber who is making applications for an on and off beer
license in the location now occupied by Mr. Johnson.
A letter was received and placed on file from Russell Sass asking that his property be zoned as
commercial. The letter was placed on file.
County engineer Nelson was present. He told the Council that the County has several thousand
dollars allotted to street work in the Village. A committee was appointed to meet with the
Commissioners to see if Elk River could get some money for street improvements.
Jim Shiff asked about a new road on his property. The matter will be investigated.
A motion was made by Meyer and seconded by Bergeson that the Council go on record as favoring
day-light saving time. Motion carried.
Upon motion by Briggs and a second by Kemper salary of Oliver Nickerson was raised to $330.00
per month to start May 1.
Everett Floodman was present and inquired about a bill for fire calls for Livonia Township. The
Council agreed to allow a small discount on the bill.
Lester Derr suggested that the Village needed an assistant in Connection with Civil defense also the
need of tennis courts at the park.
A motion was made by Bergeson and seconded by Bergeson and seconded by Briggs to raise Lester
Derr’s salary to $440.00 a month. Motion carried.
