Action Requested
Discuss a letter of support for CR33 mailbox location changes and provide staff direction.
Background/Discussion
At the October 5, 2020, Regular Meeting Open Forum, Mark Thompson spoke on behalf of his in-laws and their
neighbors regarding requested changes to their U.S. Postal Service mailbox location. Norman and Mabel Zimmer
also sent an email addressed to the entire Council regarding this matter.
They cited a concern for their personal safety to cross the busy County Road 33 to get their mail. The U.S. Post
Office allegedly would allow their mailbox on their side if located on their driveway loop. They are not
comfortable with it being located within their yard. They understand the Post Office may need to adjust their
routes but stated that times have changed, and traffic has dramatically increased.
They requested the Council send a letter to the Postmaster showing the city’s support of their concerned citizens.

Dear Postmaster:
We are writing to express our support and ask you to strongly consider the relocation of mailboxes
along County Road 33 in Elk River.
We, along with a number of our residents, have grave concerns for their life safety as they are required
to cross a busy county road to collect their mail. Residential growth in the area has greatly increased
traffic flow and the area will continue to grow.
Allowing a relocation of mailboxes to the roadside near their home will greatly improve their ability to
safely collect their mail.
Thank you for considering our request. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact our city
administrator, Cal Portner, directly at 763-635-1001.
Sincerely,
The Elk River City Council
