Discussion of the Elk River Golf Course property adjacent to Woodland Trails Regional Park
Recommend, by motion, the city consider acquiring property from the Elk River Golf Course.
Background/Discussion
Chris Singer representing the Elk River Golf Course (ERGC) presented to City Council February 1 the
potential purchase of the Pinewood Golf Course. His proposal is to give the city 18-acres of ERGC property
and $25,0000 in exchange for the purchase of Pinewood. It was briefly discussed at the Council meeting the
desire of the Parks and Recreation Commission to acquire this property.
The last time the Parks and Recreation Commission discussed the purchase of the ERGC property was
January 16, 2007. The Commission voted in December 2006 to recommend the purchase of 7.8 as a buffer
along the GNT in case the ERGC sells the wooded property to a developer. Appraised value of the 7.8 acres
of golf course property was $22,500 per acre for a total of $175,500. Due to the limited amount of funds
available in 2007, the Commission recommended purchase of only the Malmstrom property for WTRP.
Parks and Recreation Director Bill Maertz in December 2005 recommended purchase of the similar property
so it could be a buffer for the GNT. The proposal was for $250,000 – a DNR matching grant could pay
$125,000, but the DNR determined the grant was not viable after surveying the property and determining the
woods to be of low quality.
The WTRP July 2016 master plan recommends acquiring the northwest corner of the ERGC property.
