Consider Community Development Director Candidates
On July 25, 2005, the City Council interviewed the three fInalists for the newly established Elk River
Community Development Director position. These three fInalists are Michael Leek from Shakopee,
Stephen Rohlf from Elk River, and Scott Clark from Arden Hills. After the interviews, Greg
Albrecht, Sathe Executive Search, was directed to provide the City Council with reference
summaries on all three candidates.
In general, the following paragraph could apply to the selection of any city department head:
In making a selection, the City Council needs to look at the strengths and weaknesses of each of the
candidates based on their qualifIcations, experiences, responses to the interview questions, and the
background reference checks. The City Council should look at which candidate will best meet the
needs of the city both for the short-term and long-term. As we all know, the city is at a pivotal stage
in its development whereby current activities and future projects over the next ten years or so will
have a long lasting impact on how the city will look and function. In this regard, the City Council
should select the candidate that has the best experience to lead the city through some of the
anticipated projects/issues that are on the horizon and the candidate that can help us avoid
problems that we have all seen take place in other developing communities. Additionally, the
management style and personality of the candidates is important. A compatible match with myself
and city staff will help the new director be successful in his position.
