A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY OF ELK RIVER
.
A RESOLUTION ACKNOWLEDGING THE OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE OF
HANDKE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL HEAD CUSTODIAN, TERRY ZERWAS AND
OTHER PARTIES INVOLVED DURING THE
NATURAL GAS LINE LEAK CRISES
WHEREAS, on Friday, October 3, 1986 a natural gas line was
ruptured during the construction of a water line near
Handke Elementary School in Elk River; and,
WHEREAS, the natural gas line rupture created an emergency
situation with eminent danger of an explosion; and,
WHEREAS, Handke Elementary School Head Custodian, Terry Zerwas,
took quick and decisive action in helping to notify the
school authorities of the emergency and exposed himself
to possible danger by shutting off the boiler system
and extinguishing pilot lights in the kitchen stoves in
an effort to reduce the possibility of an explosion.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the City of Elk River City
Council does hereby commend Handke Elementary School
Head Custodian, Terry Zerwas for his good judgement,
quick action and bravery in helping to eliminate the
potential disaster caused by the natural gas line
rupture on Friday, October 3, 1986; and,
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Elk River City Council
recognized the outstanding performance of the School
Staff in the evacuation of students and the maintenance
of order in a crises situation; and,
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Elk River City Council
acknowledge the outstanding performance and quick action
of the Elk River Volunteer Fire Department in responding
to ruptured natural gas line crises.
Passed and adopted by the Elk River City Council this 20th day of
October, 1986.
