Receive the APPA Safety Award of Excellence
BACKGROUND \\ DISCUSSION:
The American Public Power Association(APPA)recently honored Elk River Municipal Utilities
with a Safety Award of Excellenceforsafe operating practices in 2020. ERMU received a first-
place award during the second day of APPA’s annual Engineering & Operations Technical
Conference, held virtually on March 23 & 24.
In 2020, only 129 utilities out of the 329 utilities that provided data received a safety award.
Utilities receiving these awards have proven that safety is of the utmost importance in the
operation of their companies and are recognized for the hard work that goes into ensuring that
every team member goes home safe to their families each day. These safety awards have been
given out annually for more than 65 years.
Entrants are categorized according to their number of worker-hours and ranked based on the
most incident-free records of 2020. The incidence rate, used to judge entries, is based on the
number of work-related reportable injuries or illnesses and the number of worker-hours during
2020, as defined by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).
With over 92,430 worker-hours of exposure in 2020, Elk River Municipal Utilities achieved an
incidence rate of 0.00, which earned us a first-place award in Group D (60,000-109,999

work/hrs. of exposure). There was a total of (12) 1
along with two honorable mentions within Group D.
This achievement is a testament to the culture of safety that is part of every employee’s work
ethic. Elk River Municipal Utilities values employee safety above all else. We all recognize the
importance of going home to our families each day; this is what drives our dedication to safety.
