5.1.a LIBSR 04-27-20215.La Raingarden Update Attached is an aerial photo showing the location for where the Master Gardeners and I discussed placing the planter boxes for their summer program. The Master Gardeners are working on getting these raised planters ordered and delivered. Regarding the parking lot, the Master Gardeners were not very helpful in determining plant species for the rain garden. Based on the discussion from the last Library Board meeting, we discussed utilizing ornamental grasses and some native wildflowers to dress up the rain garden. Species we will utilize include: Little Bluestein (grass) Switchgrass Prairie Dropseed (grass) Butterfly Milkweed (flower) Prairie Blazing Star (flower) These plants will be ordered once we have the ok from the Library Board with the intent to begin planting around the middle of May. With the city's contribution to the planter boxes and plant materials and mulch, we have a budget of $3,000. In addition, when the landscaping work is conducted, there was a request from the Library Board to move the boulders in this rain garden back away from the curbs; this will take place at the same time as the rest of the landscaping. Of iv-er February 19, 2021 Dear Eileen: On behalf of the Library Board, thank you for taking the time to prepare and present your ideas for parking lot rain garden plant replacement at the October 27, 2020, Library Board meeting. The Board sincerely appreciates the time and effort you put into your presentation. As you may know, the information you provided resulted in further discussion regarding grounds maintenance and the maintenance responsibilities taken on by the master gardeners and city staff. The Board requested further information for their January meeting. Following an overview by Street and Park Maintenance Superintendent Tim Sevcik, on January 26, 2021, the Board asked Mr. Sevcik to work with the master gardeners to choose a selection of hardy natural grasses to be planted in the rain garden, citing concerns with winter survival rate, replacement costs, and maintenance of your proposed plantings. Thanks again for your passion and your service to our community. If you have questions, please don't hesitate to let me know.
